History
Hagia Sophia, a monastery church built by King Manuil I (1238-1263) of the Komnenos family, who fled after the invasion of Constantinople by the Latins and founded the Trabzon Empire in 1204 in Trabzon, means "Holy Wisdom". revenue. After the conquest of Trabzon in 1461 by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, the building was converted into a mosque in 1584 by the order of the sultan and by adding a pulpit and muezzin mahfili. Julian Bordier, who came to the city in 1610, reported that the building, which had been converted into a mosque, was left empty and used for worship. The building, which was closed to worship for a long time, was repaired by the Greek craftsmen with 95.000 kurus collected by the Muslim community in 1865 and converted into a mosque again, but it was used as a storage and military hospital by the Russian army occupying Trabzon during the First World War. After the war, the frescoes of the building, which was used as a mosque until 1960, were cleaned by Russell Trust of Edinburgh University between 957-62, and restored by the General Directorate of Foundations and turned into a museum in 1964. The building, which is visited by tens of thousands of tourists every year, is transformed into a mosque by the Trabzon Regional Directorate of Foundations and is expected to appoint an imam. The conversion of the museum into a mosque is supported by some conservative politicians and media institutions; It has been launched.

Architectural
One of the most beautiful examples of the late Byzantine churches, the structure has a crossed arm with a closed arm and a dome with a high pulley. It has three beams with porches on the north, west and south. The building was covered with different vaults on the main dome and covered with tiles by giving different elevations to the roof. In addition to Christian art, the effects of Islamic art of the Seljuk Period can be seen in the stone plastics, where a superior craftsmanship is seen. The medallions with geometric interlaced decorations on the northern and western portico facades and the niches with mucarnasses on the western facade have the characteristics of Seljuk stone embroidery.

Art
The most magnificent facade of the building is the south. Here, the creation of Adam and Eve is described in relief as a frieze. On the keystone of the arch on the southern front is the single-headed eagle motif, the symbol of the Komnenos Dynasty that ruled for 257 years in Trabzon. The main portrayal of Jesus in the dome is Christos Pantokrator (Jesus, who is omnipotent), reflecting his divine side. Below it is a belt of inscriptions, and at the bottom is a frieze of angels. Twelve apostles are depicted between the windows. There are different compositions in pendants. The scenes of Jesus' birth, baptism, crucifixion and the Day of Resurrection are depicted.
