Giresun Island, located in the Black Sea with Kefken Island is one of two islands connected to Turkey. Giresun Island is 1.6 km off the coast and has an area of 40,000 square meters. There are 71 species of natural herbaceous and woody plant species on the island, especially the Mediterranean laurel and Liar Acacia. Subsequently, 10 more tree species were added. The cormorant and seagulls are naturally produced in the Black Sea and are also frequented by migratory birds. There are many relics of the mythological ages on the island where the Amazons and many tribes live. The second degree is the protected area. During the summer season, the island is the center of attention for local and foreign tourists.

There are some legends about Giresun Island. Historical sources mention that the Amazon queens built temples in the name of Ares, the god of war, and the monastery of the Bishop of Sinop, Agias Phokas. On the island there are ruins of fortifications, towers, monasteries, historic terracotta barrels and some building foundations built during the time of Alexius II. The island is protected area. Boat tours from Giresun Port are organized in summer. The island was used by the Genoese and Venetians as a shelter for a long time and today there are wild migratory birds, cormorants and seagulls. The Hamza Stone on the island represents the mother goddess Kybele, a stone sitting on three legs like a sacayak. It represents January (family) culture. With its 4,000-year history, the sacred stone is a wish stone that gives hope to the elderly and is a source of mystical power due to religious beliefs. The tradition of passing through the sacay, which is held every year on May 20 at the International Aksu Festival and is held with the belief that the lineage will be sustained, is rounded off by walking around the island. The island tour starts from Hamza Stone and ends there again.

The place of the island in mythology
The island is known in the world mythology and history with the names Aretias, Areionesos (first name), Nesos, Area, Areos, Chalceritis (the name given to the Romans). According to a rumor, the island was formed by settling a piece from Gedikkaya, located in the southeast of the city, whose appearance resembles an eagle beak. History and nature are intertwined on the island. It is understood that the ruins are surrounded by city walls. The construction of the walls is the same technique as Giresun Castle. It is estimated to belong to the Pontus period. Two large wine barrels, a temple ruin, temple site, standing walls and a watchtower are among the most striking works. "Hamza Stone" at the eastern end is a stalactite dating back to ancient times. It has been a mystical source of power for the local people throughout the ages. Roman scholar Pilinius, in his book "Ilistariaum Mundi", speaks of an open-air sanctuary on the island, presented to Mars, the god of war, and writes ... "and opposite Pharnace, Chalceritis, the Arias of the Greeks, dedicated to Mars. It is said that the birds are fighting strangers by shooting their wings. "

The island has been the scene of an important event about the Argonauts in pursuit of the Golden Fleece in mythology. Athamanas, King of Thabai, has two sons from his wife, Nefele. In the following years, the second king is convinced that his country will survive famine if he sacrifices his children. Their mother learns that Nefele wraps her children in a cloud and mist, and sends them to the Black Sea. One of the children dies in a storm in the Dardanelles, the other goes on its way and hid by the mythological people somewhere between the Dardanelles and the Caucasus. During Heracles, a group of valiant men, including Hercules, the God of Power, set out to the Black Sea to capture the golden hide. After a lot of adventures, they come to the island of Aretias. They believe that the golden hide is hidden here. However, dragon-built birds meet them on the island. The birds that Hercules had previously fired from Lake Stymphales settled here. Birds attack by throwing feathers as arrows. Even if the Argonauts try to protect themselves with their shields, they cannot avoid losing a friend. In the end, they kill the birds and go looking for the golden hide. When they can't find them, they leave the island cursing. In 1984, the research team led by captain Tim Severin built the same Argo ship without any nails to bring this legendary journey back to life. This trip, including the National Geographic magazine, BBC Television documentaries with a team of 12 people is introduced to the island all over the world. The subject is discussed in more detail in the book "Historiae Mundi" by the Roman scholar Plinius and in the book "Argonautiga" by the famous Mitos writer Apollonius (BC 295-195). Another legend relates to the daughter of King Mitridates. Many noble people want to marry the king's young and beautiful daughter. The girl does not want any because she loves a shepherd grazing her sheep at the foot of the castle. The king gets angry and closes his daughter to the monastery on the island. The shepherd was caught by the cherry tree in front of the monastery. The next day, she hangs herself on the tower of the monastery. A third story follows. Israel made a statue of the sons of Joseph. When they emigrate from Egypt and reach Palestine, they ask Moses to bring the statue. Moses miraculously brings the statue to Palestine. Here the Phoenicians take the statue and take it to Cyprus. The Greeks took the statue from Cyprus and placed it on Mount Olympos. When the Persian Emperor Daraos (Dareios) captured Anatolia and Greece, he returned the golden statue to Egypt. After that, the statue again passed into the hands of the Phoenicians. This time they bring it to Aretias Island. It is said that the Greeks attacked Giresun Island forty times to get the golden statue. The island, which has traces of past subcultures, is a rare natural wonder. The existing remains emphasize the human desire to dominate nature. Man suddenly finds himself in the depths of history, mythology. It is like living the beliefs and customs of past civilizations.
