history

The current name of Alibey Island is dedicated to Lieutenant Colonel Ali Çetinkaya, the commander of the first contingent who started the armed struggle against the sultan's order to surrender to the Greeks during the War of Independence. The island was previously known as Cunda and Moshonisia (Kokuluada). It is estimated that the Yund Islands mentioned by Piri Reis in Kitab-ı Navy belong to this region.

The population of the island is 3,000 as of 2000. However, this figure can go up to 20,000 in the summer. The majority of the population of the island consists of the Turks who migrated from the islands of Crete and Lesbos during the 1924 population exchange. For this reason, most of the elderly population of the island speaks Greek. In recent years, the population of the island has been increased by the big city residents who want to spend their retirement days in a quiet area.

Tourism

Alibey Island has been taken under protection due to its natural beauties and historical buildings and in 1976, 17,900 hectares of area in Ayvalık and its environs have been accepted as natural and historical protected areas. There are many churches and monasteries on the island of Alibey, which remained from the Greek Orthodox community before the exchange. The preservation of these structures was only possible with the recognition of Alibey Island and the purchase of property on the island by the sponsors who would transfer capital for the restoration. Finally, the restoration of the mill located in the locality known as 'Aşıklar Tepesi' was completed in 2006 and opened to visitors. There are still many historical monuments on the island waiting for sponsors for restoration.
