Bursa Yeşil Mosque is a historical building which is one of the most important examples of Ottoman architecture in Bursa. The fame of the mosque comes from the tiles.

The mosque is located in the Yeşil neighborhood; It is one of the green complexes. It is thought that the name “green al is derived from the green-colored decorations that were once found in the minarets. The capacity of the mosque is 2000 people.

According to the Arabic inscription in the crown gate in the middle of the north façade, the architect Hacı İvaz b. Ahi Bayezit (Haci Ivaz Pasha); the date of completion is December 1419. In the interior, it is understood from the inscription on the hünkar mahfili that the nakkaşı of the building is known as b Nakkaş Ali Ali. İlyas Ali (father of famous divan poet Lâmiî Çelebi); date of completion of the decorations is 1424. The mosque was built with the order of Çelebi Mehmet, one of the Ottoman sultans; Upon the death of Sultan II. Murad was completed in the period.

Architectural features

The Green Mosque is a magnificent two-storey building with two domes built by Çelebi Mehmet as a government residence.

The mosque has an inverted T plan. According to the chronological order, the buildings in this plan are the third after Orhan Gazi Mosque and Yıldırım Mosque. The main gate of the mosque, which has large and extraordinary carved ornaments, is located on the north side. A narrow corridor leads into the side rooms. The main place of worship is entered through a low gate in the middle of two columns titled Byzantine.

The symmetrical rooms on both sides of the place of worship were built as the places where the issues of the banners were discussed. The east room was used for those coming from the Anatolian Beylerbeylik and the west room was used for those coming from the Rumeli Beylerbeyligi. Later, these rooms were used as court rooms. Stairs on both sides of the entrance lead to the top floor. On the upper floor of the building there is a doner's house in the middle and palace apartments on both sides.

The place of worship consists of two main spaces covered by a dome on the same axis. The domes are 13 meters in diameter and 25 meters in height from the ground. Both domes are joined by a large arch and keystone.

Marble work

Marble brought from Marmara Island was used in the construction of the mosque; is the first marble monument in Bursa. The front of the work, windows, doors, inscriptions, and the ceiling of the door are the best examples of marble workmanship.

tiles

Besides its architectural features, the mosque has a great importance with its tile decorations. Especially in the interior, the iwans, muezzin mahfiller, khunkar mahfili, tanneries, shahnishis and mihrab tiles are the sections that are used extensively. Among these, the mihrab which is completely covered with tiles attracts attention with its rich decorations.

The mihrab is in the middle of the southern facade of the work. 1067 cm. height and 628 cm. and covered with tiles in glaze technique. It is the first tile decorated mihrab of the early Ottoman period. It is mainly covered with tiles with floral motifs and compositions. The master who made the tiles in the Green Mosque is "Mecnun Mehmet".

Wood Crafting

The entrance doors and window covers of the Green Mosque are good examples of the wooden workmanship of the time. The pulpit to the west of the mihrab, the top of which is covered with hexagonal cones, is also a product of painstaking woodwork.
Calligraphy Works

On the east and west windows of the mihrab iwan, there are two writing plates in the shape of a circle, which are identical to each other. “Amme surah” is written on the plates. One of these writings, one green and one red, is named after Ahmet Vefik Pasha, who served as governor in Bursa in the 19th century.

minarets

One of the minarets of the mosque is in the northwest corner and the other is in the southwest corner. The minarets were built in the late 19th century after the 1855 earthquake. The original minarets are thought to be covered with green tiles that give the mosque its name.

Complex buildings

After the construction of the Green Mosque, the madrasah to the west and the imaret to the east were built. The madrasa was known as the iye Sultaniye Madrasa “. The madrasah building is now used as a Museum of Turkish Islamic Art.

Across the mosque is the Green Tomb, one of the most valuable monumental buildings in Bursa.

The “Sultan Han” and “Fidan Han han inns in Bursa were built by Hacı İvaz Pasha upon the request of Çelebi Mehmet after the construction of Yeşil Mosque to generate income for Yeşil Mosque.
