Trabzon Castle, in the center of Trabzon, the castle in the highest part of the city, is one of the works that can reach the best condition in Trabzon today. Starting from the seafront and extending to the hills behind the city, Trabzon Castle rises on the old foundations of the Byzantine Age. Consisting of three separate sections: Upper Hisar, Orta Hisar and Lower Hisar, the castle is made of stones collected from old monuments. However, at the beginning of our century, the stones of the same castle were used for the construction of new buildings. No remains from the theater 300 m north of the Upper Hisar have survived.

Evliya Çelebi mentioned this castle as follows: “There is a deep ditch on the mountain side, similar to the well of hell, where seventy-seven men enter. Pure cut rock. It has a mosque, conservative houses, cellars and cebehâne.

Yukarı Hisar is the protector of the inner castle and also acts as the acropolis. It is thought that the first castle was built in 2000 BC.

In some old sources, the ruins of the hippodrome, towers, baths and palaces have been mentioned here. It is understood that it is a square plan made of cut stone. In the sections built during the reign of Emperor Justinian, with a great coincidence, the walls continued to give a round appearance. The inner fortress, which underwent changes in various periods, is higher than the other fortresses and is further strengthened by a two-storey thick fortification wall and towers in the south. The east of the inner castle and its slopes facing Kuzgundere are still protected by walls. The rubble and block stones are sometimes found with human reliefs. Some inscriptions dating from the Ottoman period found in the Trabzon Museum were also found among the city walls.

Emperor II. It is the continuation of Orta Hisar, Upper Hisar and Inner Castle built by Alexios (1297–1330) and does not have a uniform appearance. There are imaret and Zağanos gates to the west of the fortress, and Tabakhane and Kule gates in other sections. Also included are Orta Hisar Mosque (Panagia Chrysokephalos Church), new Friday Mosque (Hagios Eugenius), Government House, Zagnos Bridge, Kule Hamam, Double Bath, Amasya Mosque, Sirin Hatun Mosque and Musa Pasha Mosque.

The Lower Hisar descends from the west to the sea right next to Zağanos. To the east are the gates of Pazar and Mumhane and these walls connect with the walls of Orta Hisar in the south. Around the Lower Hisar, St.Andrea Church (Molla Siyah Mosque), Hoca Halil Mosque, Pazarkapı Mosque, Kundupoğlu and Yarımbıyıkoğlu Houses, Eight Regular Baths, Tophane Baths, Hacı Arif Baths and İskender Paşa Fountains are located.

This part of Trabzon Castle was built during the reign of Emperor Alexios II (1287–1330). However, there is an inscription with a tuğra indicating that Fatih Sultan Mehmet had it built on the gate of the Rubble Bastion in Lower Hisar.
