According to archaeological evidence, the first settlers in the region with a history dating back to 2500 BC were the Hittites and later the Hittites. The first inhabitants of the region are Bithin, Mariandin and Migdon immigration communities of Phrygian tribes. During the Greek colonization process from Western Anatolia to the Black Sea, which started in the 7th century BC, commercial ports were also established in the region. The region, which was ruled by Persians until 334 BC, was ruled by Macedonian officers for a short time after Alexander the Great's campaign to Anatolia. Zonguldak, a part of the Pontus State founded by the Persian people Mithridates in the Western Black Sea Region with the support of the local people, continued until the destruction of the Roman Empire by the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD. The Eregli region of Zonguldak became one of the first places where Christianity spread, and during this period Adreas, one of Jesus' apostles, organized the first rites in the Sacred Worship Caves.

The Anatolian Seljuk army came to the region in 1084 and conquered the region. Later, the region was taken over by the Genoese, Candaroğulları dominated the region during the period of principalities. With the conquest of Amasra by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1460, Zonguldak and its environs were completely conquered by the Ottomans.

II. During the reign of Mahmut, the first coal was discovered in 1829. In 1848, the first coal mines were opened. Belgian and French companies operated these quarries.

The port of Zonguldak hosted materials to go to Sarıkamış during World War I, and played an important role in relations with the USSR during the War of Independence.

In 1919, after World War I, French soldiers invaded Zonguldak and then the Black Sea Eregli on the pretext of protecting the rights of French companies; however, they were endangered by the resistance of the forces of the Defense of Rights Associations in and around Zonguldak and they left the region on June 21, 1920.
