There are different theses about where the name of Muş comes from. However, the most accepted one is the one that comes from the Mushkis. The Mushki people were housed in the mountains of the south of Moush, and they built the castle, which is probably on the top of the Red Visit. Later, nomadic Turkmen communities began to settle in the region. When the Turkmen came, there were Armenians in the region.

After the battle of Malazgirt Square, the city of Muş, which became Seljuk soil, Sökmenoğulları (Ahlatşahlar) then under the reign of the Eyyubids. The city was rebuilt by the Anatolian Seljuks in the 13th century. Soon after the Mongols (Ilhanlılar) looted by the city was then looted by the Timurids. After the Karakoyunlu and Akkoyunlu sovereignty, the city was connected to the Safavids for a short time and entered the Ottoman rule in 1514 under the influence of Şerefhanlar. It was connected to Bitlis province in the late 19th century. In the Ottoman period, the majority of the population was Armenians.

In 1916-1917, the city, which was the region of influence of the Russians and Armenians, witnessed the Armenian deportations. During the War of Independence in the region in 1920 the Hallo Uprising took place. After these events in 1924, the city, the city center was made. Later, in the region where Sheikh Said Uprising took place, the city, which was connected to Bitlis for a short time, became the provincial center in 1929.
