Etymology

The name of Malatya is known as Melita in Kültepe tablets and as "Maldia" in Hittite tablets. It is stated that Malatya derives from "melid", which means honey in Hittite, and it is expressed with "ox head and foot" in Hittite inscriptions. "Melite + ava" means "country of honey". Then this name "Meliddu", "Melide", "Melid", "Milid", "Milidia", "Melitea" as the inscriptions are mentioned. The Arabs who conquered Malatya named the city "Malatiyye". name took its current form with the Turkish conquest of Malatya and the name became official founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923 in Malatya.

Strabon, one of the ancient geographers, described Malatya as one of the ten governors of the Cappadocian Kingdom (280-212 BC) on the border of Commagene.

General history

Malatya is located in the most strategic location of the East Anatolia Region and the Euphrates River. Because of this location, the first settlements go to 6000 BC. In addition, the region is constantly fought because of the important trade routes. It has always caused conflicts between the two states. There are many mounds within the borders of Malatya. The oldest settlement is the site of Arslantepe, the first settlement of Malatya. The first settlement area is a fertile agricultural area built on the water's edge. Used for about 6000 years. It is an area of ​​approximately 35250 m2. Arslantepe Mound, which is the first settlement today, is located in Arslantepe quarter of Orduzu town.

Early period

Ottoman period

Malatya, which was under Ottoman rule since 1515, became a province with the Republic (with article 89 of the Constitution of 20 April 1924) while it was affiliated to the province of Harput. The first mayor after becoming a province was Hasan Derinkök, the last Ottoman bey, who was also named after Hasanbey Street.


Republican period

Malatya province in the years 1927-1931; It consisted of Adıyaman, Kahta, Arapgir, Akçadağ, Hekimhan, Pütürge and Kemaliye (Eğin) districts. The total population is 258.331 and the center population was 56.528 with the villages. Governor Mehmet Tevfik Bey, the mayor was Mehmet Naim Karaköylü. The town hall was in Emir Ahmedoğlu Inn.
