Background
During World War I, the Gallipoli Peninsula was the scene of one of the bloodiest wars ever seen. In the war where the British lost 205 thousand and the French lost 47 thousand, different figures emerged about the casualties of the Turkish side. According to the reports of casualties submitted to the Commander-in-Chief of the 5th Army Command, the total casualties of the Turks are 213,882. The burial of soldiers who died due to intense casualties turned into a serious problem for both sides. In a narrow area, the dead had to be buried in mass graves instead of single graves.

Following the Armistice of Mondros, new cemeteries and monuments were built by the British. After the Turkish War of Independence, the Turkish government agreed to leave the graves of England, France, and Italy soldiers who died in World War I for different reasons and the monuments erected in their name to the respective states separately and indefinitely.

During the Lausanne Treaty, the British increased the number of cemeteries and monuments they started from the occupation period to thirty. The French who built a cemetery in Seddülbahir during World War I made new arrangements until 1930. New Zealanders began to form their own martyrdom and monuments from 1919 onwards. For Turkish martyrs, a monument could not be erected in Gallipoli for a long time.

The only concrete step taken in this period for erecting a monument for Turkish martyrs was the reconstruction of Mehmet Çavuş Monument, which was formed by placing the stones collected in the region on top of each other in 1934, which was the first Turkish monument of Gallipoli. The construction of the monument was carried out by the Gendarmerie Private School. All official ceremonies of the Turkish delegations were held at the site of this monument until the Çanakkale Martyrs' Monument was erected.

history
In 1943, the Ministry of National Defense organized a monument competition for the martyrs of Çanakkale. In 1944, 37 projects participated in the competition. The project of Feridun Kip, Doğan Erginbaş and İsmail Utkular, a student at Istanbul Technical University, won the competition. Due to financial difficulties, the project could not be implemented for a long time.

The issue, which came to the agenda of the parliament at various times, was re-entered into the agenda of the Turkish public as a result of the application of the National Turkish Student Union (MTTB), a student organization, to the Çanakkale Governorate and the government in April 1952. The application was accepted by the Ministry of Public Works and the studies started. It was decided to carry out the project which won the first prize in the competition opened previously by the Ministry of National Defense. A committee called kişilik Aid Committee for the Construction of Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial 9 was established by Emin Nihat Sözeri, chaired by Emin Nihat Sözeri, for the monitoring and organization of the construction. It was decided to build the monument at Hisarlık Tepe, to construct it as reinforced concrete and to cover it with granite. The call for assistance from the Aid Committee for the Construction of the Çanakkale Martyrs' Monument became a major aid campaign. The foundation of the construction was laid on 17 April 1954.

The monument construction was stopped after months and it was determined that the materials used in the construction were defective and of poor quality and the tender was terminated. The re-tender construction was scheduled to end in July 1958. However, during the stagnation period, the salaries of the personnel were paid and the prices of construction materials increased, so the aid money collected from the public ended in 1957. The foundation was reinforced and the granite had only reached 12 meters. Milliyet newspaper reporter Necmi Onur's news that the construction is incomplete and the newspaper's author Refi Cevat Ulunay's writings showed great interest in the public opinion. As of January 18, 1958, the newspaper announced that it had organized a nationwide aid campaign to end the Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial. The campaign was supported by other media outlets of the Turkish press. The campaign began with the goal of collecting 100 thousand pounds of aid on March 18, 1958 ended 1 million 686 thousand 251 pounds was reached. The monument's hull construction was completed on 18 September 1959.

The official opening of the monument took place on 21 August 1960, which coincided with the 45th anniversary of the Anafartalar Victory. The opening of the monument was made by the Chief of General Staff Gen. Cevdet Sunay.

Abide maintenance and personnel affairs, the Republic of Turkey in 1962 was transferred to the Ministry of Education. General Directorate of Forestry declared Gallipoli peninsula in 1973 as "national park".

In 1971, the British Queen II. At a ceremony, including Elizabeth, a war museum was opened under the monument. Remains and documents from the Çanakkale Wars began to be exhibited here. The War Arts Museum was later moved to the Kabatepe Museum.

The reliefs on the feet of the main pedestal were completed in 2002, and in 2004 changes were made in the ceremonial area and the symbolic martyrdom. The monument underwent restoration in 2005 and took its final shape in 2007 with the construction of a new martyrdom. In symbolic graves, the tombstones in the form of double glazing with the names of the martyrs were changed. In order to make the names unreadable due to transparency and rainfall, non-transparent plates with Turkish flag motifs were placed between the windows.

Architectural features
The height of the structure is 41.7 meters. The feet are 7.5 meters wide. The monument covers an area of 62.5 square meters. The designer of the monument whose desire to impress the audience with its size stated that it tries to form a different interpretation of the triumphal arch form which has been used since Roman times. From a distance, Mehmetçin's "M" appears in the form.

The Turkish flag was embroidered on the ceiling of the monument. On the hall of honor there is a sarcophagus with a quartet of Mehmet Akif Ersoy's poem to Çanakkale Martyrs. There are eight reliefs on four legs of his brother. The four facing the sea describe the sea wars and the four facing the land.

On the left side of the entrance of the monument is the symbolic martyrdom built in 1992. To the right of the entrance gate of the martyrdom is the famous words of Mustafa Kemal, written in 1934, addressed to foreign soldiers and read by the Minister of the Interior Şükrü Kaya on Anzac Day.
