Information About Amasya Castle

Directions,Location,Map

Amasya Castle is located on the Harşena Mountain which covers the north of the city center of Amasya. Also known as Harşena Castle. The rock on which Amasya Castle is built is located 700 meters from the sea and 300 meters from Yeşilırmak. According to some historians, the castle was built by King Pontus Mithridates. According to some, the castle was named Harşana / Harşena because it was built by Karsan or Harsana.

Amasya Castle has changed hands many times in historical struggles and it has been destroyed in most of them. The castle, which was attacked many times during the reign of Persians, Romans, Pontus and Byzantines, was rebuilt every time. After the conquest of Amasya by the Turks in 1075, the castle underwent an important repair. The castle, which was used until the 18th century, lost its military importance after this century.

The top of the fortress is cut and the walls are made of rubble stones. The castle, which has eight defense levels up to the shore of Yeşilırmak, has an 8-meter-diameter corridor called Cilanbolu and descends down 150 steps from a high place in the middle of the castle. There are cisterns, water tanks, ruins of Turkish baths and Pontus King Tombs carved into the rock. An important part of the city walls survived. The castle consists of three parts: İçeri Şehir (Hatuniye Neighborhood), Kızlar Palace and Yukarı Kale. Amasya Houses, baths and mosques were built on the ancient city walls rising from the north of Yeşilırmak in the Hatuniye Quarter, which covers an area of approximately 800 meters along the coast of Yeşilırmak, between the Istasyon Bridge and the Government Bridge. This section, also called the Lower Castle, can be accessed from the Low Bridge, the Station Bridge, the Madenüs Bridge across the Sultan Bayezid Mosque and the Government Bridge. The Girls' Palace is separated from the City by City (Hatuniye District) by rail.
