Selimiye Mosque, Edirne, the Ottoman sultan II. The mosque was built by Selim Architect Sinan. The Selimiye Mosque, built by Sinan at the age of 90 (referred to as 80 in some books) and called as "my masterpiece", is one of the most important works of both Mimar Sinan and Ottoman architecture.

According to the inscription on the door of the mosque, construction began in 1568 (Hijri: 976). The mosque is planned to open on Friday, November 27, 1574, but the II. After Selim's death, it was opened for worship on 14 March 1575.

It is owned by the Sultan Selim Foundation. Today, the mosque in the center of the city was built during the Süleyman Çelebi era, and later developed by Yıldırım Bayezid'in Edirne's first palace (Saray-ı elik) and Baltacı Guards were harem. history
Reason for the election of Edirne
It is not clear why Sultan chose Edirne as the city where the mosque will be built. Evliya Çelebi wrote in his book, Seyahatname, that the sultan saw the Islamic prophet Muhammad in his dream and asked him to build a mosque in memory of the conquest of Cyprus. However, since it is known that it was conquered in 1571 three years after the construction of the mosque, this claim cannot be truthful. More realistic comments on this issue point out that there was no need for a new large mosque in Istanbul at that time, that Edirne was the center of Ottoman sovereignty in Rumelia, and that Selim had been loving the city since his youth.

Dome
Selimiye, which is located on a hill, uses a technique that has never been seen before in any mosque or ancient temple. In the previous domed buildings, although the main dome rises above the graded half domes, Selimiye Mosque is covered with a single lebi 43.25 meters high, 31.25 meters in diameter. The dome is mounted on a pulley resting on 8 columns. The pulley is attached to the grid by 6 meters wide belts. In this way, the architect Sinan, with the breadth and spaciousness he gives to the interior, makes it easy to understand the space at once. The dome also defines the outline of the mosque's exterior.
minarets
The minarets in the four corners of the mosque, each with three private balconies, are 380 centimeters in diameter and 70.89 meters high. The height of the minarets including the world is 84 meters according to some sources and 85 meters according to some sources. There are three different ways to the minarets of the two minarets near the door of the sentence. The other two minarets have one staircase. The stone carvings of the two minarets in the front are pits and the carvings of the minarets in the middle are raised. The fact that the minarets are close to the dome makes the mosque as if it were reaching towards the sky. The most important feature of this mosque is that it is seen from all sides of Edirne.
Interior decorations
Marble, tile and calligraphy works of the mosque are also important. The interior of the building is decorated with Iznik tiles. Right below the large dome, the doner kebab has 12 marble columns and is 2 meters high. Some of the tiles were taken to Moscow in 1877-1878 by the Russian general Mikhail Skobelev during the Ottoman-Russian War.
Courtyard
The building has 3 doors opening to the north, south and courtyard. The inner courtyard is decorated with porches and domes. In the center of the courtyard is a fountain made of marble. In the outer courtyard, there are primary school, darül kurra, darül hadith, madrasah and imaret. Sıbyan school is used as a children's library and madrasah as a museum. In the past, the mosque was lit by torches. The soot coming out of the torches was coming out of a hole specially made to create airflow.

“Inverse Tulip” motif
There is an inverted tulip motif under one of the marble legs of the muezzin mahfil of the mosque. According to the legend, there was a tulip garden on the plot where the mosque would be built. The owner of this land did not initially want to sell it. Finally, he sold his land by asking Mimar Sinan to have a tulip motif in the mosque. The architect Sinan made the tulip motif in reverse. The tulip motif represents a tulip garden on this plot, while the reverse is the opposite of the owner.
