Information About Long Bridge (Ergene Bridge)

Directions,Location,Map

Uzun Bridge is the only bridge on the Ergene River in Edirne that connects Anatolia and the Balkans and is the longest stone bridge in the world. The former name was Ergene Bridge. The bridge gave its name to Uzunköprü district of Edirne.

Uzunköprü, 1426-1443 in the Ottoman Sultan II. He was commissioned by Murat, the chief architect of the period, Müslihiddin. Master Mehmet Muslihinddin and architect Mehmet worked together in the construction of the bridge.

The bridge is 1,392 meters long and 6.80 meters wide and has 174 arches. Some of the belts are pointed, some are round. The height and width of the bridge vary from place to place. Some have seliaran feet and balconies. Elephant, lion and bird figures draw attention among the stone feet.

The bridge was established to cross the Ergene River, which was a natural obstacle to the conquests of the Ottomans in the Balkans. The stone bridge built on the demolition of the wooden bridges with the waters of the river enabled the Turkish army to continue its raids in winter. When the Long Bridge was built, a mosque was built at the beginning of the bridge and a district called Ergene City was built.

The bridge was last repaired in 1963. During this repair, concrete was poured over and its historical identity was damaged. Edirne-İzmir State highway was passing over the historical bridge. This road was transferred to the new bridge built in 2015 and the passage of heavy vehicles over the bridge was forbidden.
