The province of Çorum has been inhabited since the beginning of historical periods. Hattuşaş, the capital of the ancient Hittites, is in Çorum. Archaeological excavations around Alacahöyük, Hattuşaş, İskilip, Kuşsaray, Pazarlı, Eskiyapar, Büyükgülücek and Balimsultan villages and above surface finds reveal that tools, tools and weapons dating to the Copper Age and Bronze Age were found.

As a result of the studies, it was revealed that there were human settlements in the Çorum region during the 4th stage of the Chalcolithic period during the Polished Stone Age (Paleolithic). These artifacts were also found in Alacahöyük, Büyük Güllücek, Boğazköy, Eskiyapar and Kuşsaray. Settlements have continued since this period. Çorum and its surroundings later came under the reign of Hittite, Phrygians, Cimmerians, Medes, Persians, Galatian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Danişmendliler Principality, Mongol, Eretna Principality, Kadı Burhaneddin Ahmed State and finally Ottoman Empire.

Çorum is one of the cities that have continued the local Anatolian cultural tradition, which has been formed for thousands of years by various civilizations side by side and on top of each other, but the establishment of the central district as a city dates back to the 11th century. It is one of the rare Anatolian cities established by Muslim Turks. Çorum is an open air museum in terms of the richness of the cultural documents. Since the 1830s, Çorum has become the center of attention for European travelers and many local and foreign scientists.
