The Church of the Virgin Mary, called Ani Cathedral (Armenian: Անիի Մայր Anա Mayար Anii Mayr Taçar) was built in 989 by the architect Trdat who repaired the dome of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The dome was destroyed during the earthquake that occurred in 1319 and the building was not used and it was damaged in 1832 earthquake. After the earthquake in 1988, the building was completely ruined. The cathedral is located in the current Ani ruins in Kars.

The 10th century structure, which strongly emphasizes vertical lines, achieves an impressive sense of height. The 30-meter cathedral has a large apse. It was built on the Greek cross plan and has three entrances: one for the prince, one for the Patriarch and one for the congregation.

The cathedral was built in 900 years next to the new settlement of the Cilician Holy Authority and is considered one of the most important works of medieval Armenian architecture. In 1064, the historical crosses of the Church were removed by Alp Arslan and the grand cathedral was converted into a mosque in 1071 and named as "Fethiye Mosque". In 1124, Ani was conquered by the Georgian King David and restored to the church. The cathedral was restored in the 13th century. The ruin of the city due to the earthquake of 1319, the cathedral of the cathedral with the collapse of the conical dome has lost its importance and began to be used officially. The earthquake that occurred in 1832 also damaged the building to a great extent. The earthquake in 1988 also damaged the northern and western corners.
