          It is believed that the construction date of the church is at the beginning of the 5th century, consistent with the history of the First Ephesian Council or the 3rd Ecumenical Council gathered in 431. The last archeological excavations have shown that the church was built on the remains of a Roman basilica abandoned in the 3rd century. In 500, the church was enlarged to become a huge cathedral.

          It is among the first Seven Churches of Christian religion.
